Learning Opportunities

Philanthropy Exchange reflects the Council’s network model and its revitalized commitment to facilitating new connections, exchanges, and partnerships in the sector. The program will offer thought provoking sessions on some of the leading issues facing philanthropy – as well as professional development workshops and enhanced networking opportunities.

A variety of learning opportunities may include:

  • Plenary Sessions: Large, formal presentations featuring keynote speakers and invited guests. Topical and/or motivational general sessions that provide a starting point for programming throughout the day.
  • Concurrent General Sessions: Sessions that run simultaneous to one another that feature keynote speakers and additional panelists in a slightly more intimate session than plenary sessions.
  • Learning Labs: Thirty minute learning segments with data-centric presentations or demonstrations.
  • Breakout Sessions: Interactive concurrent issue discussions, problem solving and/or skills building/professional development workshops.
  • Talent Time: Very small, interactive exchanges (often 1-on-1) with professionals on varying topics.
  • The Lawyer Is In: One-on-one 10-minute private consultations with a member of the Council’s legal team. Help is available to ask burning legal questions related to your foundation.
  • Opportunities to Network: be sure to take time to meet your peers!
    • Networking Lunch: Unstructured and informal time to strike up or continue conversations and meet new thought partners over lunch.
    • Speed Networking: Expand your professional network in a fast-paced round robin of information exchange.
    • Receptions: Join fellow attendees, presenters, exhibitors, sponsors and staff in social free time to expand your network and make a professional friend or two.
  • Philanthropy at Work (off-site sessions): Educational experiences at various locations around DC. A chance to see philanthropy working for good outside of the conference hotel.
  • Introducing ‘POP TOPS’: Continue breakout session conversations or gather to discuss any POPular TOPics at one of eight unique learning lounge spaces throughout Council Central. These pods are designed for more intimate, organic dialogues.

The 2014 Philanthropy Exchange will also build on the Joint Affinity Group's (JAG) Unity Summit that precedes the conference, including jointly planned programming that reinforce the synergy between JAG’s racial equity focus and the Council’s spotlight on the importance of coming together despite the fractures of a polarized society.
