Made in L.A. (Henry Hampton Award-winning film)

In an era of globalization where cheap products flow into the United States from poor nations, many Americans choose to wear brands with the “Made in America” label as a sign of patriotism or a belief that American workers are protected from exploitative conditions common in less developed countries. The reality is the opposite: Most people would be surprised to learn about the poor working conditions in the garment industry within U.S. borders. “Made in L.A.” is the David and Goliath story of a group of predominantly Latina immigrant garment workers in Los Angeles, who confront a major clothing company’s subcontractors who are exploiting them. It is an inspirational story of awareness and action against the sweatshops hidden behind the “Made in America” label. After the screening, join us for a discussion with the filmmakers and one of the activists featured in the documentary. Co-sponsored by the Council on Foundations and Grantmakers in Film + Electronic Media.
