The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) launched the National Disaster Resilience Competition (NDRC) in September 2014. Through the NDRC, HUD is partnering with the Rockefeller Foundation to encourage communities to focus on incorporating long-term resilience strategies into disaster recovery. HUD is encouraging the 67 eligible jurisdictions with qualifying disasters to partner with local philanthropy and community foundations for three reasons:

  • Leveraging of funds and other resources are required to develop a winning proposal
  • Community engagement is a critical rating factor for successful projects
  • The experience and skillsets of philanthropy can guide the development of policy and projects to address the resilience challenges of the region

To support eligible applicants, the Rockefeller Foundation is sponsoring the National Disaster Resilience Competition Capacity Building Initiative to provide capacity building in support of developing NDRC projects and for leaders, governments, and philanthropic interests across the country to help communities better understand the multi-faceted approach that is required to build a more resilient future.

Join Harriet Tregoning, Director of HUD's Office of Economic Resilience, Sam Carter, Associate Director of Resilience at the Rockefeller Foundation, and Will Heaton, Vice President of Network at the Council on Foundations on Wednesday, January 7th from 1 – 2 pm ET for a webinar to learn more about the competition and ways philanthropy can partner with grantees to move your communities toward a more resilient future.
