Immigration Matters: Local Solutions to a National Imperative

Last Update: Thu, December 11, 2008
Description
Increased immigration is the inevitable result of a globalized economy. In the absence of a cohesive, national immigrant and integration policy, American communities large and small are grappling with the challenges and opportunities of increased immigration at the local and state levels. At this session, you’ll learn about innovative policy and programmatic models that help communities leverage the contributions immigrants make as workers, taxpayers, and consumers. Presenters will also share and discuss effective strategies to address the challenges of increased immigration, such as the need for English classes, heightened demand for health and social services, and competition for scarce resources. This session will also examine the roles that foundations can play as grantmakers and civic leaders to respond to this global phenomenon.
