Discovering International Grantmaking

Last Update: Thu, December 11, 2008
Description
Current global issues—climate change, skyrocketing food prices, gender inequalities and a growing numbers of people living in poverty—have prompted foundations to consider international grantmaking. However, restrictive legal environment and the ongoing war on terrorism have converged to discourage foundations from actively engaging in global giving. This session will explore several practical options for overcoming obstacles to international giving and embarking on a path forward: working with grantmaking public charities (intermediaries) and taking the necessary legal steps for direct, international giving, including expenditure responsibility and equivalency determination. This session will look at specific examples of foundations that are currently making grants internationally and their approaches.
