Doing Heavy Lifting to Make Fair Access to Higher Education a Reality

Last Update: Thu, December 11, 2008
Description
Within the public education sphere, we face the following challenges: underinvestment in minority group education; growing numbers of low-income students; issues associated with campus climate, cultural sensitivity and relevance; and admissions requirements at traditionally white institutions of higher learning. For minority and low-income students, minority-serving institutions of higher education (MSIs) continue to be a lifeline, without which many would not have access to higher education. This session will focus on the contemporary efforts of MSIs to help members of minority groups and low-income students gain access to resources and achieve success. It will focus on the mission, successes, and challenges these institutions face and ways in which foundations can help them continue their vital work.
