Philanthropy in the Arab World: Progress and Pitfalls Since 9/11

Last Update: Thu, December 11, 2008
Description
Philanthropic efforts geared toward the Arab world consistently face a difficult question: can anyone guarantee that terrorists will not be a beneficial party? Since 9/11, the U.S. government has investigated scores of charities giving to Arab nations. Many have been forced to close their doors, leaving individual and organizational donors uncertain or unwilling to continue giving to vital causes. This session will feature representatives from foundations, organizations, and the U.S. government who are exploring and implementing promising new practices—from new federal policies to an innovative giving mechanism backed by USAID—to make giving to Arab communities safe, secure and abundant.
