- CEO and Trustee Transitions: Managing Change
In today's nonprofit environment, boards must be prepared for the departure of the CEO and any trustees. It might be tomorrow. It might be 10 years from now. But some day, the CEO is going to leave the foundation, as well as trustees as their terms end or they have changes in their own lives. Are you ready? If there is a well-thought-out plan in place, expect smooth transitions. If not, departures could trigger a chaotic situation that reduces the foundation’s effectiveness and panics key stakeholders. This workshop will help leaders understand how to proactively approach CEO succession planning and trustee rotation and manage the change process.

- What if the IRS Audits your Foundation?
Hyatt Regency, Mineral Hall B/C, Third Level

- Data on Foundation Effectiveness: What a Trustee Needs to Know
A crucial function of foundation trustees is to assess the effectiveness of the foundation. But identifying the right performance metrics is a daunting challenge. What should board members do to understand the effectiveness of the foundations they govern? What role can data on the perceptions of grantees, staff, trustees, and others play in that assessment? This interactive panel will explore these questions and others as well as discuss ways to improve a foundation’s impact and effectiveness.
Presenters: Phil Buchanan, president, Center for Effective Philanthropy; Christy Pichel, president, Stuart Foundation; Davis Campbell, trustee, Stuart Foundation
- Investing for Impact: Mission Related Investing and Extending Your Reach
The need for foundation leaders and trustees to harness their foundation endowments and financial capacity to further their missions has never been greater. With a growing array of programmatic needs as well as investment opportunities, it's still possible to achieve real economic leverage in extending programmatic and mission objectives without sacrificing financial returns. This interactive session will look at how many foundations of all types have begun the board-level discussions on mission, strategy and impact -- and how trustees can lead a thoughtful, productive process to link the program, financial and fiduciary sides of a foundation.
