Community Foundations

Developed in the spirit of accountability, transparency, and continuous self-improvement, the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations are philanthropy’s most rigorous standards—evidence that community foundations seek excellence for their communities and donors.

Since 2005, hundreds of community foundations have been confirmed in compliance with National Standards. These standards serve as both a blueprint for internal organizational development and a tangible set of benchmarks for external demonstration of operational excellence in six key areas:

• Mission, Structure, and Governance
• Resource Development
• Stewardship and Accountability
• Grantmaking and Community Leadership
• Donor Relations
• Communications

What's New with National Standards?

The Council on Foundations, along with Community Foundations National Standards Board and the Community Foundations Leadership Team, is excited to unveil the next generation of National Standards. We’re equally pleased to introduce you to a new, streamlined process and robust system of support, which you’ll find at CFStandards.org. This new website features:
