For charitable organizations making grants internationally, September 14, 2017 was a good day because the IRS issued Revenue Procedure 2017-53 updating previous guidance on foreign public charity equivalency determinations (“EDs”) and giving us several preferred practices related to the preparation and issuance of EDs.

Zero, in the context of a healthy world, is the most ambitious number of all. If the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were about making progress to achieve a healthy planet and people, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are about getting to zero, or as close to it as possible. The Global Goals agenda is about creating a world where no one goes hungry, no family lives in extreme poverty, no mother or child dies from preventable causes – and then keeping it that way.

In 2016, women represented over three-quarters of foundation staff in the US but among the largest grantmakers,fewer than half of foundation CEOs were women. In the same year, racial and ethnic minorities made up only 10 per cent of foundation CEOs. Given these statistics alongside current political and social discourse on race and inequality in the US, American philanthropy is increasingly focusing on the themes of diversity, equity and inclusion – known in a sector addicted to abbreviations as ‘DEI’.
