When people think of the myriad of partnerships in which the Council engages, the Legal Team may not come first to mind. But the fact of the matter is, the Legal Team regularly engages with other organizations, particularly our regional partners, on behalf of the sector.

How poignant and timely that we gathered with HR professionals from around the country to explore what equity means to our foundations just as our nation is grappling with its own diversity conversation in the backdrop of the recent troubling events in Charlottesville, the latest in an increasingly racially-polarizing environment. In the Charlottesville incident, Heather Heyer was killed after a car plowed into counterprotesters of a white nationalism event.

At the Council, we have seen a growing trend in community foundations of all sizes and geographies asking about how to make international grants, often from donor or corporate advised funds. Our latest publication is a new global philanthropy report with the Foundation Center—Local Communities with Global Reach: International Giving by U.S. Community Foundations. This report is the first-ever analysis of international giving by large U.S. community foundations and I think another example of disruption within our traditional community foundation model, as we found that community foundation global grantmaking has drastically increased in the last decade.

This spring I traveled to Japan, where I had the opportunity to visit the Hosoo textile company in Kyoto. The company was founded in 1688 and has been passed down through 12 generations of the same family, still sitting on the same site. Formerly focused on textiles for traditional garments used in imperial households, the company has retooled itself for the cultural edge of the modern era. Now, they are working with MIT on innovative smart fabrics and providing material to fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Channel. This seamless transition between the ancient past and the near future was a frequent sight in Japan, and it struck me as a stunning metaphor for how we might not only adapt to momentous change, but use creativity and take risks to leap ahead of it.

Recently, Council staff traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to join more than 50 funders to discuss how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are relevant to local challenges facing communities across the Southwest. The gathering was the sixth city in a series of national conversations about the SDGs. In each city, from San Francisco to Jacksonville to New York City, the Council has partnered with a regional philanthropy association as well as leading local funders to co-host events that are inherently international while also hyper-local at the same time. Our respective networks and expertise have been critical assets in expanding this work on global goals around the country.

At the Citi Foundation, we believe that success is a combination of the impact we can generate directly through our grant making and the influence we can have on others by amplifying what works (or what isn’t working)—and most importantly why success matters.
