This June, the House Committee on Natural Resources sent a letter to the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), in which committee members asserted that NRDC may need to register under FARA. Natalie Ross details why several of the reasons outlined by the committee could apply to many U.S. Foundations working internationally. If the language is not tightened, there could be significant unintended and negative impacts on U.S. non-profits.

I can’t believe the month of May is almost over and I am embarking on my 60th day at the Council! I have enjoyed meeting various corporate foundations and hearing about the amazing work you are leading across the country during my first two months. This week, I met with Tiffany & Co. to learn about their leadership in coral conservation; listened to Pfzier and PVH’s innovative approaches to corporate volunteerism; and dove deep into conversation with JP Morgan Chase about their commitment to scaling global workforce development initiatives.

While I have made meaningful professional contributions, I find myself at a juncture in my career where investing in my professional development will enable me to make a more significant impact as I look to transition into the executive leadership ranks with a foundation or leading the philanthropic arm of a major corporation.

SECF is partnering with the Council on Foundations to promote the first Inclusive Economic Prosperity Convening in the South, May 23-24, hosted by The Spartanburg County Foundation. We in philanthropy often present ourselves as a beacon of enlightenment on the most important issues of the day. We pride ourselves on doing more than talk about making the world a better place – we walk the walk and invest real resources to make that vision a reality. Our websites feature inspiring, uplifting language about the values that inform our work – respect, accountability, diversity and empowerment. So it’s doubly important that leaders in our community reflect those values in everything we do, and be rewarded for doing so.

Economic mobility is inextricably linked with economic prosperity and is the common thread that helps to propel communities forward. We believe that continued education around these issues is necessary at both the staff and board levels and this convening is designed for both audiences.

Over the past several weeks, the Outreach Committee of the Board has had the privilege of hearing from many of you about your hopes and ideas for the Council on Foundations. I’ve personally listened to feedback from members at the Public Policy Summit in Philadelphia a few weeks ago, and at meetings in New Mexico, and I’ve talked with dozens of members and friends of the Council on the phone. Over the next few weeks, our committee members will be taking part in more in-person conversations in Los Angeles, Dayton, Minneapolis and Chicago, and I know there are other gatherings of philanthropic leaders in the works.

Global grantmaking and international issues remain a priority for the Council, from our leadership on the Board of WINGS, to programming and resources for global grantmakers and our continued commitment to working on the SDGs. To help lead this work, we welcomed a new Atlas Corps Global Fellow in late March—Caroline Needles—from Canada who will spend more than a year at the Council, helping lead our international program. I hope you’ll connect with her during her time here at the Council!

As we think about the future of the Council, I personally have been reflecting on the role the Council must play moving forward—not just what it’s been for the past 70 years, but the changing context that is shaping the future of community foundations.
