On December 20, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced the first recipient of our 100&Change competition’s $100 million grant: an early childhood intervention for children in the Syrian refugee region co-developed by Sesame Workshop and the International Rescue Committee. The Sesame/IRC project was selected over an initial field of more than 1,900 applicants through a multi-stage process that eventually identified four finalists.

When I first learned of the Council on Foundations’ Career Pathways program, I wasn’t sure whether I should apply. I was interested by the programs’ goal to increase the number of people of color in senior and executive positions in philanthropy and to thereby deepen capacity for impact in the field, but facing a looming deadline made me think it’d be best to wait until next year.

I recently signed on to the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™, a CEO-driven pledge to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace. I strongly urge other sector leaders to do the same. As part of this pledge, more than 300 CEOs, from some of the biggest corporations and organizations in the world, have committed to push for greater diversity and inclusion in their respective workplaces. By taking advantage of such a large swath of the business community, CEO Action hopes to create a lasting legacy of workforce diversity and inclusion.

Approximately 50 leaders from higher education, philanthropy, and the private sector recently met at Duke University for an intimate conversation about implicit bias. Organized by the TIAA Institute, Duke University, and the Council on Foundations, “Managing Effectively Across Differences: The Impact of Implicit Bias on Leadership,” examined the impact of implicit bias upon operational effectiveness.
