This month marks my 20-year anniversary of passing the bar and becoming an attorney, and sometimes I think I’ve heard it all when it comes to nonprofit law. Thank goodness for the Council’s community foundation members, who continually challenge me with unique and interesting questions, and give me the opportunity to crack open the Code books and learn something new on a daily basis.

Since 1978, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has facilitated philanthropic efforts to respond to critical needs in our region. In more recent years, however— especially since the launch of our Innovation Fund in 2012—the Community Foundation has also worked to seed new, innovative approaches to community economic development.

We just concluded the third Council on Foundations Endowments and Finance Summit, where more than 100 foundation CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, board members and other leaders met to consider the future of the philanthropic sector. Based on post-event buzz and input from participants, it seems to have been our best Summit yet.

In holding to these core values, our CEO is committed to intentionally seeking out opportunities for her team to learn and develop. In October 2016, she and our Senior Director of Talent and Organizational Development informed me of the Career Pathways program.
