Best Practices, Legal Compliance, and Research

The Council develops and maintains an expansive collection of foundation best practices, sample documents, and legal compliance resources on a variety of topics–from ethics and accountability, to hiring practices and our annual salary survey.

Community Foundation Excellence (CFE)

Developed in conjunction with Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy, these courses help community foundation staff, board members and volunteers master the unique aspects of the community foundation field.

Maximum Impact for Community Foundation Assets

For decades, some foundations have made impact investments that intend to generate financial and social returns to complement grants, partnerships, advocacy, and other tools in the philanthropic toolbox. Increasingly, individuals, foundations, and other institutions are interested in making impact investments that break down the barriers between social and economic value creation.

Global Giving

Many community foundations are looking to advance change around the world, especially through cross-border giving. For more than 20 years, the Council has played a key role in facilitating responsible and effective international grantmaking. We also advocate on behalf of foundations to urge the U.S. government to reduce the barriers to cross-border philanthropy and support the development of philanthropy as an essential part of a strengthened global civil society.

Lessons from the Community Foundation Centennial

In 2014, the Council played a critical role in organizing a worldwide commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the nation’s first community foundation, the Cleveland Foundation. Throughout the year, we celebrated the impact of community philanthropy and helped move the field forward by looking ahead to the next 100 years. Throughout the year, we worked to advance community foundation professional development and institutional impact.
