As a convener of grantmakers of all sizes, focus areas, geographies and, increasingly, those who are structuring their philanthropy in new and creative ways, the Council has an opportunity to serve as a leadership voice for our field, shifting the narrative and public perception of philanthropy and ensuring that all of us are working to elevate the common good and advance humanity. But in order to do this, we need you. More specifically, we need your voice, your input and your ideas. For the remainder of 2019, I and my Council colleagues will be gathering information about how the Council can best serve you and your organizations as you do your important work. What’s your vision for philanthropy? And how can the Council, in partnership with other strong sector partners, be a part of making that vision possible?

The Council on Foundations today announced that Lumina Foundation President and CEO Jamie Merisotis has assumed the role of Chair of the Board of Directors. Merisotis was elected in November 2018, and began his term as Board Chair at the Council’s Leading Together 2019 conference. He succeeds Javier Soto, who has served as Chair since 2017 and will remain on the board. Merisotis previously served as Board Vice Chair for two years.

Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Council on Foundations announced the 2019 winners of the Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships. The awards recognize innovative partnerships between foundations and government that have been critical in transforming communities and improving the quality of life for low-and moderate-income residents across the country.

2019 is an important year for the Council on Foundations. Above all, we are committed to thinking creatively (and responsively) about how we best serve Council members. A first step under the leadership of Kathleen Enright is a comprehensive review and analysis of the Council's membership structures and dues, to ensure we are ready to achieve our mission: advancing the work of our members and the philanthropic sector.

The Council on Foundations announces that Studio in a School, a New York City program that serves young people by integrating visual arts into teaching and learning, will be awarded the Chapman Prize at its upcoming Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C. on November 28.

The Council on Foundations has announced the appointment of Kathleen P. Enright as its new President and CEO. Kathleen will begin on March 5, 2019, and Gene Cochran will continue to lead the organization through February, 2019.
