In response to requests for comments on the Chinese government’s draft Overseas NGO Management legislation, the Council worked with members and key partners to develop and send the following letter to Chinese officials on June 3rd, 2015. We look forward to continuing to monitor this legislation, the likely ensuing implementation process, and working with all of you on this and other issues impacting your ability to flow philanthropic dollars across borders. As this situation develops, the Council will continue to provide a space for our members to convene and discuss strategy for how we collectively address the implications of this legislation.

This week, American Bar Association (ABA) has selected the Council’s Senior Counsel and Vice President of Legal Affairs Suzanne Friday for its prestigious “Outstanding Nonprofit Lawyer Award” in recognition of “distinguished service by a nonprofit – in-house counsel.”

On May 27, 2015, the Council on Foundations and the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) hosted a conference call on China's Draft Law on Management of Overseas NGOs and its potential impact on U.S. funders and other organizations working in and with China. More than 130 participants registered to join the conversation, which discussed a range of possible concerns with the proposed Chinese legislation. The call featured non-profit law experts and a funder working in China, as well as Council staff who described the Council’s planned submission of comments on the draft legislation.

Philanthropic leaders today reaffirmed the sector’s long-term commitment to ensuring that America’s military service members, veterans and their families receive the support they deserve. Sector leaders gathered in Washington, D.C. to announce that more than $276,000,000 in cash and in-kind contributions through the Philanthropy-Joining Forces Impact Pledge.

With over 2.5 million returning veterans, the scale of the issues facing military families requires an all-hands-on-deck approach that includes community institutions, the private sector, government, and philanthropy.
