For more than 30 years, the Council's Grantmaker Salary and Benefits (GSB) Report has provided the sector with the most comprehensive data on grantmaker staff composition and compensation in the U.S. at community, private (family and independent), and public foundations, as well as other staffed grantmaking entities. Grantmakers rely on this annual report to plan budgets, benchmark personnel policies and practices, determine salary levels for new and existing staff, and more. In collaboration with our partners at Mission Investors Exchange, we included an impact investing specific staff position in the 2017 survey to highlight philanthropy's staffing response to an area of rapidly growing interest.

A first-of-its kind analysis of international grantmaking by large U.S. community foundations has been released by the Council on Foundations and Foundation Center. Local Communities with Global Reach: International Giving by U.S. Community Foundations shows that international grantmaking is becoming more common among U.S. community foundations, which traditionally make grants in locally-bound geographic communities.

Data gathered in the 2016 Council on Foundations–Commonfund Study of Investment of Endowments for Private and Community Foundations® (CCSF) show that participating private foundations reported an average return of 6.4 percent for the 2016 fiscal year (January 1 – December 31, 2016) while participating community foundations reported an average return of 7.3 percent for the same period. (All return data are reported net of fees.)

Presented annually, this award recognizes a grantmaker who, with a combination of vision, principle, and personal commitment, is making a critical difference in a creative way and has demonstrated collaboration, risk, and innovation in the sector.
