Curated Resources for Making Grants Globally

Country Notes LogoThe Council on Foundations maintains a regularly updated library of resources for making grants in specific countries. Country Notes are widely used by U.S. and global foundations, nonprofits, governments, and academic institutions. Country Notes provide key information on domestic nonprofit laws and regulations, research and reports, and local contacts to strengthen cross-border philanthropy.

In partnership with the International Center for Not-For-Profit Law, we provide nonprofit law information for 35 countries. For the 13 most-visited countries, the Enhanced Country Notes also include:

  • a curated library of research and reports
  • information on local philanthropic and nonprofit networks (members only)
  • key in-country contacts (members only)
  • and Council members grantmaking in that country (members only)

You may also want to reference our Global Grantmaking Resources to access a range of resources on the basics of global grantmaking and learn more about specific regulatory or compliance issues impacting U.S. foundations working globally.

Help create new country notes

Our Country Notes library currently covers 35 countries. While the list is extensive, it obviously does not include every country where U.S. foundations and corporations make grants. Country Notes are grant-funded and the Council on Foundations would love to hear from grantmakers  interested in funding the creation of one or more new country notes. Inquiries should be directed to Brian Kastner.

The purpose of these resources is not to provide legal advice, but rather to give grantmakers and their advisors an opportunity to access potentially relevant materials in a quick and meaningful way. For our NGO law resources, we recognize that the legal and regulatory situations are often fluid and interpretations of local law vary. Please be advised that the Council on Foundations and ICNL are not liable for inaccuracies in these resources or accompanying translations.

If you believe any information in our NGO law resources is incorrect, please inform Lily Liu at the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law of any necessary corrections. For all other questions related to accuracy of non-legal resources within these Country Notes, please contact Brian Kastner.
