Corporate Philanthropy Update - July 2018

This year, the Council has embarked on a body of work that elevates the collaborative ability of foundations, nonprofits and city municipalities to create social change. The Inclusive Economic Prosperity series, which launched in May 2018 in South Carolina, has already engaged more than 130 leaders in conversations around the role foundations can play in economic development. This series explores who really benefits from philanthropic investments and how philanthropic dollars can drive equitable outcomes through innovative grantmaking, public-private partnerships, and impact investing.

Many corporate foundations already participate in the philanthropic work that falls under this umbrella, given your commitment to issue areas like workforce development and economic empowerment. For example, we see this in Principal Financial Group’s commitment to creating jobs through their involvement in the place-based initiative Future Ready Iowa Alliance or Unilever and Sundial’s recent announcement of $100 Million for their New Voices Fund to support women entrepreneurs of color.

Our May event in South Carolina was co-hosted by corporate leaders BMW, Milliken and Wells Fargo, and we heard from former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on navigating the economic ladder.

Join us next month for our convening on August 28th and 29th in Minneapolis, as we explore how to build regional economic innovation ecosystems with experts including Jeff Hoffman, Managing Partner, Legend 52 and serial entrepreneur from Priceline.com and uBid.com; and Dr. Jamie Bracey, Director at the Center for Inclusive Competitiveness at Temple University.

Did you know that grants by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation account for almost 50% of all international grants awarded by U.S. foundations? Or that between 2011 and 2015, only 12% of funds went directly to local organizations without first flowing through an intermediary?

Join us on Tuesday, August 14th to hear about the findings our new report, The State of Global Grantmaking by U.S. Foundations, as we discuss how U.S. foundations currently engage with grantees globally and what these trends mean for grantees and our sector.

Disaster Relief: The Council and FEMA

On July 9th, the Council announced a new partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to allow for increased knowledge sharing around disaster response and relief. This collaboration will allow for increased efficiency and coordination of disaster relief efforts. The Council serves as a resource for philanthropic organizations during disasters as well as a liaison to much-needed government resources.

"We’ve seen how powerful it can be when philanthropy and the government work together, and we’re excited to partner with FEMA to improve our efforts," said Stephanie Powers, Council vice president of policy and partnerships. "We have seen too many communities struggle to rebuild after a hurricane or flood while organizations unknowingly duplicate efforts. Through collaboration and consistent communications, we can best aid these communities during the ongoing recovery duration.”
