This afternoon, the United States House of Representatives failed to advance the Supporting America's Charities Act (H.R. 5806), a milestone bill that would have widely benefited philanthropy and charitable organizations across the country. The vote broke down along party lines, with 275 Members voting for the bill and 149 Democrats voting "no" on the grounds that the provisions are not offset with spending cuts elsewhere. Despite majority support, the bill failed to garner the two-thirds support necessary to overcome procedural challenges.

The Council on Foundations announced that this month Laura Tomasko will begin a new role at the White House, where she will focus on impact investing public policy and philanthropic engagement. During her four years at the Council, she managed public-philanthropic partnership projects and led an impact investing initiative focused on community foundations. Laura’s work at the Council, helping to promote and nurture philanthropic engagement in impact investing, has garnered national recognition for the impact of foundations and the innovative practices of the field.

White, CEO of the Mott Foundation, for his work to promote community philanthropy. White was presented with an award acknowledging his enduring commitment to the field during a reception at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The Council is aware that an individual healthcare worker, who has since tested positive for Ebola, recently travelled from the Cleveland airport. To date, there are no confirmed cases of Ebola in Ohio.

The Council on Foundations today announced the release of its 2014 Grantmakers Salary Tables and Board Compensation Tables. Both publications include data collected through the Council’s annual Grantmakers Salary and Benefits survey, and represent two of the most comprehensive sets of data on U.S. foundations’ staff compensation and board compensation practices available. The upcoming Grantmakers Salary and Benefits Report will be released in early 2015 and will go into greater detail about benefits, staffing practices, and staff demographics at the nation’s foundations and corporate giving programs.
